Internationales Gitarrenfestival Tübingen 2019

We look forward to welcoming you to the “Internationales Gitarrenfestival Tübingen” for the third time! - In autumn the guitar will be heard again in our city –For five days everything will move around the magic of the instrument. Renowned musicians will come together here to inspire the audience.

This year, under the direction of Sven Gnass, the Residenz Orchester Baden-Württemberg will once again play in the “Stiftskirche”. In a double concert, they bring us closer to the world of the rediscovered Peruvian composer Pedro Ximenez Abril y Tirado (1780-1856) and the Brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos (1887-1959).

The German guitarist Isabella Selder and Santiago Molina Gimbernat from Mexico / Spain, present the great stylistic diversity of the guitar as Molina Guitar Duo. Francesco Buzurro from Italy offers a special music encounter between cultures in which sounds and colors mix. As part of the "Villa-Lobos Guitar Competition 2019" you can enjoy the talent of the competition's winners of the last year in a concert. Young guitarrists from the “Tübinger Musikschule” offer a matinee concert for the whole family to enjoy. Paulo Bellinati and Cristina Azuma complete the festival with a musical trip to Brazil. Also, from Friday 8th November is the guitar constructor Philipp Neumann at every event and presents his work in a small guitar exhibition.

The music should always contribute to dialogue and cultural exchange, so the festival is also present at the award ceremony of the “Integrationspreis Tübingen 2019”, where Augusto Tec and Rebecca Metzger will play songs from different countries.

In a short time, the festival has become a reference in the guitar scene. Join us in the third edition of the “Internationales Gitarrenfestival Tübingen” and discover the diversity of the guitar.

The German classical guitarist Isabella Selder and Santiago Molina Gimbernat from Mexico/Spain, both acclaimed soloists and prize winners at international competitions, have been playing together as the Molina Guitar Duo since 2017. They met during their studies at the University Mozarteum in Salzburg, Austria. With the duo Isabella and Santiago do not only share the devotion to chamber music but also the passion for projects that go beyond the common guitar repertoire, for example by connecting music with poems. In their programs they combine works by contemporary composers such as Feliu Gasull i Altisent with their own arrangements of music by Claude Debussy or Manuel de Falla, among others, with the aim to enrich the guitar repertoire with music by some of the greatest composers.

Apart from their artistic career as soloists and chamber musicians, in 2017 Isabella and Santiago also founded their own music school, the Gitarrenstudio Friedberg in Friedberg (Bavaria, Germany), where they teach students of all ages, offer workshops and organize students‘ concerts.

During the “Internationales Gitarrenfestival Tübingen 2019” the Molina Guitar Duo will present the enormous stylistic variety of the guitar with the program Suiten, Songs & Sonatinen: Besides their own transcriptions of music by Debussy and Manuel de Falla as well as original works by M.Castelnuovo-Tedesco and Alexander Tansman, Isabella and Santiago will perform famous songs by the Beatles and music by the brazilian composer Heitor Villa-Lobos to whom the edition of the festival is dedicated.

Defined by Ennio Morricone as "one of the greatest in the world because he is able to make everyone enjoy cultured music", he started to play guitar since he was six years old and combines the passion for classical music with a deep research in the field of jazz that has led him to develop a particular way of improvising. This unconventional guitarist collaborates in various international ensembles and projects. Awarded the title of Ambassador of Peace with Music at the UNO in 2009 in Minneapolis, he is also a professor of jazz guitar in Italy and accomplish an intense international activity of concerts and master classes.

In his performances, the Sicilian musician describes his very personal vision of the guitar, treated like a small orchestra with a surprising freedom of improvisation that maintains the rhythm and harmonic elegance. In his repertoire, he includes pieces of various origins, from Piazzolla to the music of Jobim and Django Reinhardt. On this occasion he will offer us a musical journey that represents a meeting between cultures, where sounds and colors mix, confirming the idea that music does not need translation and knows no barriers.

"Crossover" is, therefore, the most appropriate term to describe this concert. For Francesco Buzzurro there is only "music" and that's it.

Paulo Bellinati is one of Brazil's most accomplished sort-after contemporary guitarist, composer, arranger and also a respected academic in music. He rediscovered, transcribed and recorded the music of the great Brazilian guitarist-composer Annibal Augusto Sardinha (Garoto). Cristina Azuma is a world renowned Brazilian guitarist with a career path that stands out in the classical guitar world. Both highly accomplished and internationally awarded musicians in their solo careers. Their first CD “Pingue-Pongue” is released and distributed in Europe by the German label Acoustic Music Records.

The “Internationales Gitarrenfestival Tübingen” is proud to present them in their 2019 European tour. For the first time, they bring a rich repertoire of original compositions and arrangements from Bellinati to Tübingen based on Brazilian styles.

The guitar is an essential element of Brazilian rhythms, being so intrinsically related to the urban lifestyle that emerged in the late-19th century in Rio de Janeiro. Bearing a strong influence from European dances like waltz, polka, mazurka, schottiche, but also from African styles such as the lundu, those rhythms are the very expression of the Brazilian cultural melting pot. Interestingly, Azuma’s background on baroque guitar blends perfectly with these popular rhythms. In the words of Bellinati himself: “We have been playing together for more than 30 years already, despite the fact that Cristina lives in Europe and I live in Brazil. She is my best interpreter by far, and she understands the Brazilian music as well as the classical and baroque guitar universe. It’s always a huge pleasure to share the stage with her.”

For this European tour Cristina plays a nylon string classical guitar and Paulo plays a typical Brazilian serenade guitar with steel strings on it, a very rare instrument made in 1935 in Rio de Janeiro.
